Long-Term Traffic Lane Shift: May 2019 Traffic Advisory

A stage of bridge deck reconstruction and miscellaneous improvements will occur in both the Eastbound and Westbound directions of the Newark Bay - Hudson County Extension (NB-HCE) from the Interchange 14C Toll Plaza to Milepost N7.3 (over Christopher Columbus Dr.) on the Eastbound roadway and to Milepost N7.7 (over 9th Street) on the Westbound roadway starting on 5/6/2019 and lasting for approximately four (4) months, until September 2019. Over this time period, traffic lanes in both directions of the NB-HCE roadway will be shifted. The Westbound roadway lanes and Merseles Street On-Ramp will be shifted to the right. One lane of the Eastbound roadway will be diverted to the Westbound roadway and will not have access to the Columbus Drive Off-Ramp, the remaining two Eastbound lanes will be shifted left at the Interchange 14C Toll Plaza and the Columbus Drive Off-Ramp will be reduced to one lane (normal Off-Ramp configuration is two lanes). No shoulders will be present, but emergency pull-off locations will be provided. On-site wrecker service will be provided.

It is anticipated that traffic impacts will be moderate during peak travel periods until motorist become accustomed and adjust to the new traffic pattern.

Variable message signs to alert motorists of the construction will be placed along the Eastbound Roadway at Mileposts N4.7 and N5.9 and along the Westbound Roadway at Milepost N8.2 one week in advance of the planned construction start date.
